The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 3:34 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Rodney Weston, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Mike Allen, Scott Andrews, Raynald Blais, Hon. Gerry Byrne, Fin Donnelly, Randy Kamp, Yvon Lévesque, Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, Tilly O'Neill-Gordon, John Weston and Rodney Weston.

 

Acting Members present: Brad Trost for Blaine Calkins.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: François Côté, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Cohen Commission: Brian J. Wallace, Senior Commission Counsel; Lara Tessaro, Junior Commission Counsel.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, March 15, 2010, the Committee proceeded to a briefing on the Commission of inquiry into the decline of sockeye salmon in the Fraser river (Cohen Commission).
 

Brian J. Wallace made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:40 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:46 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of the motion of Fin Donnelly, — That, in response to information presented to the Committee by Trevor Swerdfager, Director General for Fisheries and Aquaculture Management at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Committee ask Alexandra Morton to appear before it at the next most convenient possible occasion in order to speak on the issue of sea lice and their impact on the salmon stocks as well as to respond to the testimony given by representatives from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

 

Randy Kamp moved, — That the motion be amended by adding after the words “Alexandra Morton” the following: “and Dr. Mark Sheppard, Senior Aquatic Animal Health Veterinarian for the province of British Columbia,”.

Debate arose thereon.

 

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Randy Kamp and it was agreed to.

The motion, as amended, read as follows:

That, in response to information presented to the Committee by Trevor Swerdfager, Director General for Fisheries and Aquaculture Management at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Committee ask Alexandra Morton and Dr. Mark Sheppard, Senior Aquatic Animal Health Veterinarian for the province of British Columbia, to appear before it at the next most convenient possible occasion in order to speak on the issue of sea lice and their impact on the salmon stocks as well as to respond to the testimony given by representatives from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

 

At 4:59 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
