The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 3:40 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Kevin Sorenson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Diane Bourgeois, Peter Goldring, Francine Lalonde, Hon. Keith Martin, Alexa McDonough, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry, Kevin Sorenson, Peter Van Loan and Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

Acting Members present: Ted Menzies for Bill Casey and Pablo Rodriguez for Hon. Stéphane Dion.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Principal.

 

Appearing: Hon. Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

 

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs: Jamal Khokar, Director General, Latin America and Caribbean Bureau. Interim Electoral Council of Haiti: Jacques P. Bernard, Director General. Elections Canada: Jean-Pierre Kingsley, Chief Electoral Officer; Diane R. Davidson, Deputy Chief Electoral Officer and Chief Legal Counsel.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on May 10, 2006, the Committee commenced a study of Canada's role in complex international interventions that involve multiple foreign policy instruments focusing on Canada's efforts in Haiti.
 

The Minister made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:43 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:48 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Jean-Pierre Kingsley and Jacques Bernard made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:50 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
