The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met jointly, in a televised session at 3:24 p.m. this day, with the Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs in Room 160-S Centre Block, the Chair, Bernard Patry and the Deputy Chair, Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Consiglio Di Nino, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Stéphane Bergeron, Stockwell Day, Hon. Art Eggleton, Paul Harold Macklin, Alexa McDonough, Hon. Dan McTeague, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry, Raymond Simard and Bryon Wilfert.

Members of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Senate: Honourable Senators Raynell Andreychuk, Consiglio Di Nino, Pat Carney, Eymard G. Corbin, Pierre DeBané, John Trevor Eyton, B. Aladair Graham, Frank W. Mahovlich, Vivienne Poy, Herbert O. Sparrow.

Acting Members present: Yves Rocheleau for Francine Lalonde.

Associate Members present: Eleni Bakopanos and David Kilgour.

Other Members present: Gérard Binet, Hon. Charles L. Caccia, Jeannot Castonguay and Sophia Leung.

By special invitation: His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Also present: From the Senate Committees Directorate: François Michaud, Clerk, Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Other Senators present: Honourable Senators Aurélien Gill and Pana Merchant.

Witnesses: Canada Tibet Committee: Thubten Samdup, President; Tenzin Dargyal, President, Montreal Branch; Lodi Gyari, Special Envoy of His Holiness the Dalai Lama; Samdhong Rintoche, Chair, Tibetan Government in Exile.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), and the motion adopted by the Committee on March 23, 2004, the Committee met with the Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs in order to meet His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Thubten Samdup, Tenzin Dargyal and His Holiness made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 4:27 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
