FISHERIES COMMITTEE TRAVELS TO EASTERN CANADA

REVISED - Please note change in dates

Ottawa, April 02, 2003 - The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans will be traveling to Atlantic Canada from May 6 to 9, 2003 to hear from organizations and individuals on issues related to the Atlantic Fishery.

The Committee has agreed to concentrate on the following issues during this study:

  • Reaction to the Minister’s announcement on the cod fishery
  • Licensing and fleet separation
  • Seal management
  • Science and research
  • Atlantic Fisheries Policy Review
o Conservation
o Economic and Social Viability
o Access and Allocation (including core fishing licenses and licenses for new species)
o Governance

The Committee will hold hearings in the followings cities

Gaspé, QC (May 6)
St. John's, NL (May 7)
Halifax, NS (May 8)
Moncton, NB (May 9)

Those interested in appearing before the Committee are invited to submit their request in writing to the Clerk of the Committee by April 11, 2003:

  • The Committee is hoping to hear from as many groups as it can during the upcoming hearings. The Clerk will communicate with those selected to appear to provide necessary information concerning dates and times of the Committee’s hearings, the time allowed for presentations, and other details.
  • Those not selected, or unable, to appear before the Committee for whatever reason may still make their views known. Written submissions may be submitted to the Clerk no later than April 25, 2003 and will be made available to members of the Committee.
  • Witnesses scheduled to appear before the Committee and unfamiliar with the committee process may consult the guide for witnesses at www.parl.gc.ca and click on Committee Business.
