Meeting No. 82

Wednesday, February 27, 2002

The Standing Committee on Finance met at 3:47 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Sue Barnes, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sue Barnes, Scott Brison, Roy Cullen, Ken Epp, Shawn Murphy, Lorne Nystrom, Bryon Wilfert.

Acting Members present: Raymonde Folco for Carolyn Bennett, Judy Sgro for  Maurizio Bevilacqua, Karen Redman for Nick Discepola, Maria Minna for Albina Guarnieri, Julian Reed for Sophia Leung, Jim Peterson for Gary Pillitteri, Jocelyne Girard-Bujold for Pauline Picard.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: June Dewetering, Acting Principal, Marc-André Pigeon, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Urban Transit Association: Amilia Shaw, Director, Public Affairs. From the Railway Association of Canada: Chris Jones, Director, Government Relations; Gérald Gauthier, Director, Industry Liaison. From West Island Business Development Council: Georges Nydam, Industrial Commissioner, Yves Picard, Chief Executive Officer, "Carrefour jeunesse emploi Marquette et Ouest-de-l'Ile".

The Committee considered its future business.

Bryon Wilfert moved, -That, in relation to Bill C-209, the Committee invite Mrs. Jocelyne Girard-Bujold, M.P. as well as officials from the Department of Finance to appear before the Committee on Thursday, February 28th at 9:00 a.m. and that clause-by-clause consideration follow immediately thereafter.

Debate arising thereon;

The question being put on the motion, it was agreed to.

Bryon Wilfert moved, --That 48 hours notice be given to the Members of the Committee before any new item of business is considered by the Committee and, that the notice be filed with the Clerk of the Committee and circulated to all Members in both official languages.  Upon receipt of the notice, the Clerk will put the new item of business on the agenda of the next Committee meeting.

Debate arising thereon;

The question being put on the motion, it was agreed to.

The Order of Reference dated Tuesday, October 16, 2001, being now read as follows:

ORDERED, -- That Bill C-209, An Act to amend the Income Tax Act (Public Transportation Costs) be now read a second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Finance.

The Chair called Clause 1.

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 5:45 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
