Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(f) and the motion adopted by the committee on Monday, January 31, 2022, the committee resumed its study of Francophone immigration to Canada and Quebec.

The committee proceeded to give drafting instructions to the analyst for a draft report.

The committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to committee business.

It was agreed, — That the committee proceed to sit in public.

At 4:39 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:46 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

Motion

Alexandre Boulerice moved, — That the committee invite the directors of the Canadian National for a two-hour meeting to answer questions from parliamentarians on the board of directors' and the company's respect for the official languages; that the Minister of Transport participate in this meeting to update the committee on what steps the government intends to take to ensure that the Official Languages Act is enforced at the Canadian National; and that this meeting take place at the earliest opportunity.

Debate arose thereon.

Amendment

Francis Drouin moved, — That the motion be amended by adding before the words “and that this meeting” the following: “that the Commissioner of Official Languages also be invited to answer questions from the committee;”.

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Francis Drouin and it was agreed to.

The question was put on the motion, as amended, and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 11; NAYS: 0.

The motion, as amended, read as follows:

That the committee invite the directors of the Canadian National for a two-hour meeting to answer questions from parliamentarians on the board of directors' and the company's respect for the official languages; that the Minister of Transport participate in this meeting to update the committee on what steps the government intends to take to ensure that the Official Languages Act is enforced at the Canadian National; that the Commissioner of Official Languages also be invited to answer questions from the committee; and that this meeting take place at the earliest opportunity.

At 4:49 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:55 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(f) and the motion adopted by the committee on Monday, January 31, 2022, the committee resumed its study of government measures to protect and promote French in Quebec and in Canada.

The committee commenced consideration of a draft report.

At 5:32 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
