Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a briefing session to provide an overview of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and its mandate

Tom Rosser made a statement and, with Arran McPherson and Kevin Stringer, answered questions.

At 4:42 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:48 p.m., the sitting resumed.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

Motion

Bernadette Jordan moved, — That the Committee proceed to sit in camera.

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 4.

At 4:50 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:52 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite officials to study the Supplementary Estimates (C) 2015-16 on March 8, 2016.

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Minister and officials to study the Main Estimates 2016-17 on April 19, 2016.

At 5:18 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:18 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

On motion of Ken McDonald, it was agreed, — That the Committee commence a study of the Northern Cod Stock and its relevance to associated species. This study would evaluate the replenishment of the stock and what other species are affected by it in the region. The study would also look at sustainable harvesting technologies for the future of the cod fishery; and that the Committee report its conclusions to the House.

At 5:28 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
