NEWS RELEASE

ECONOMICS OF POLICING

Ottawa, May 12, 2014 -

Today, Mr. Daryl Kramp, Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security, tabled the Committee’s report entitled Economics of Policing following an extensive study of policing in Canada that began in June 2012 . The report contains 13 recommendations that range from the identification of efficiencies within policing to the sharing of best practices and innovative community-based programming through inter-agency collaboration.

The aim of the Committee’s study was to inquire into the cost drivers and challenges permeating police work today and to identify ways of reducing the overall costs of service delivery, while maintaining high standards in policing for Canadians through this period of fiscal restraint and into the future. The Committee’s report reflects the testimony it received from a wide range of witnesses during the course of its study, including federal departmental officials, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, provincial, municipal and First Nations policing services, police sector and provincial government representatives, municipalities, non-governmental organizations, as well as individuals and academia from across the country, the United States and the United Kingdom.

Policing is an essential public service; it is fundamental to the well-being and vitality of our communities and to the safety of Canadians. The Committee’s recommendations call for collaboration and innovation to address the challenges and unsustainable rising costs in policing, and the Committee hopes that this report on the economics of policing will help to foster a sustainable path for the future.
