The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 11:08 a.m. this day, in Room 268, The Valour Building, the Chair, Rodney Weston, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Robert Chisholm, Ryan Cleary, Randy Kamp, François Lapointe, Ryan Leef, Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, Robert Sopuck, John Weston and Rodney Weston.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Ron Cannan for Patricia Davidson.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Thai Nguyen, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Yukon Fish and Game Association: Gordon Zealand, Executive Director.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, March 3, 2014, the Committee resumed its study of recreational fishing in Canada.
 

Gordon Zealand, by videoconference from Whitehorse, Yukon, made a statement and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

François Lapointe moved, — That the Committee undertake a study as soon as possible to examine the effects of the declining American Eel population in order to develop an action plan, jointly with the plan prepared by the Quebec Department of Energy and Natural Resources, designed to: (1) reverse the decline in the population; (2) increase the economic activity generated both domestically and internationally by this fishery; (3) preserve the eel fishing techniques in Kamouraska as part of our intangible marine heritage; and (4) designate the American Eel as a species of “special concern” under the Species at Risk Act, and that the Committee report its findings and recommendations to the House at the earliest opportunity.

 

Randy Kamp moved, — That the Committee proceed to sit in camera.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: Ron Cannan, Randy Kamp, Ryan Leef, Robert Sopuck, John Weston — 5; NAYS: Robert Chisholm, Ryan Cleary, François Lapointe, Lawrence MacAulay — 4.

 

At 11:53 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:53 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That all Committee members statements, starting with John Weston, be made public.

 

At 12:03 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
