The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 1:05 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Scott Reid, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Harold Albrecht, Hon. Irwin Cotler, Nina Grewal, Pierre Jacob, Wayne Marston, Scott Reid and David Sweet.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Erin Shaw, Analyst; Charlotte Landry, Research Assistant.

 

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Alain Gendron, Director, Northeast Asia Division; Rebecca Netley, Deputy Director, Human Rights and Governance Policy Division; Graham Shantz, Director General, North Asia Bureau.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development on Thursday, April 23 , 2012, the Subcommittee resumed its study of the Human Rights Situation in North Korea.
 

Graham Shantz made a statement and, with Rebecca Netley, answered questions.

 

STATEMENT BY THE CHAIR

The Chair informed the Subcommittee that the Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs) had issued a statement expressing condolences on behalf of Canada on the death of Oswaldo Paya Sardinas over the summer.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the motion adopted on September 25, 2012 concerning this matter be rescinded.

 

At 2:03 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
