The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 1:05 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Scott Reid, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Russ Hiebert, Wayne Marston, Scott Reid and David Sweet.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Judy Sgro for Hon. Irwin Cotler and Dave Van Kesteren for Nina Grewal.

 

Other Members present: Pierre Jacob and Bruce Stanton.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Melissa Radford, Analyst; Erin Shaw, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Greg Giokas, Director General, South, Southeast Asia and Oceania; Lisa Rice Madan, Director, Southeast Asia and Oceania Relations. Canadian International Development Agency: Jeff Nankivell, Acting Regional Director General, Asia; Leslie Norton, Director General, International Humanitarian Assistance Directorate.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Subcommittee on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, the Subcommittee commenced its study of the Human Rights Situation in Myanmar.
 

Greg Giokas and Jeff Nankivell made statements and answered questions.

 

At 2:09 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 2:10 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee invite the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade to discuss the possible ramifications of requesting that the UN secretary appoint a commission of inquiry concerning Human Rights in North Korea at the earliest opportunity.

 

At 2:15 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
