The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in camera at 1:08 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Scott Reid, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Hon. Irwin Cotler, Nina Grewal, Russ Hiebert, Wayne Marston, Ève Péclet, Scott Reid and David Sweet.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Melissa Radford, Analyst; Erin Shaw, Analyst.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee study the human rights situation of the Iranian refugees living in Camp Ashraf.

 

It was agreed, — That, in relation to its study of the situation in Camp Ashraf, the Subcommittee invite witnesses on Tuesday, December 6, 2011, and Thursday, December 8, 2011, subject to witness availability.

 

It was agreed, — That, in relation to its study on the human rights situation in Sri Lanka, the Subcommittee invite the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka or her designate to appear in a public meeting on Thursday, December 15, 2011.

 

It was agreed, — That, notwithstanding the motion adopted on Thursday, November 3, 2011, which reads as follows:

“that the Subcommittee study the urgent human rights situation of the persecution of the Copt community in Egypt and Christian minorities in Iraq and Iran, in light of the pattern of persecution of Christian minorities in each country; and that up to two meetings be allocated to the study”;

The Subcommittee agree to two separate studies as follows:

1. That the Subcommittee undertake a study of the urgent human rights situation of the persecution of the Copt community in Egypt; and

2. That the Subcommittee undertake a study of the urgent human rights situation of the persecution of the Christian minorities in Iraq.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee invite representatives from the "Peace Brigades International" to appear in 2012.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee study the Iranian fourfold threat - nuclear, genocidal incitement, terrorist and massive domestic human rights violations, which has intensified since the last witness testimony heard before this Subcommittee two years ago; and

That the Subcommittee begin this study in 2012.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee invite Mark Dubowitz and Dr. Emanuel Otolangee to appear before the Subcommittee in relation to its study on Iran.

 

At 2:04 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
