The Standing Committee on Official Languages met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, the Hon. Michael D. Chong, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Tyrone Benskin, Corneliu Chisu, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Pierre Dionne Labelle, Royal Galipeau, Jacques Gourde, Élaine Michaud, Erin O'Toole and Bernard Trottier.

 

Acting Members present: Brian Jean for Corneliu Chisu, Massimo Pacetti for Hon. Stéphane Dion, Anne Minh-Thu Quach for Yvon Godin and Kyle Seeback for Joyce Bateman.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lucie Lecomte, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages: Graham Fraser, Commissioner of Official Languages; Ghislaine Charlebois, Assistant Commissioner, Compliance Assurance Branch; Sylvain Giguère, Assistant Commissioner, Policy and Communications Branch; Colette Lagacé, Director, Finance and Procurement; Nancy Premdas, Assistant Commissioner, Corporate Management Branch.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Élaine Michaud gave notice of the following motions:

That the Committee invite the Privy Council Office to appear for a two-hour meeting about official languages and the Governor in Council appointment process before June 1, 2013.

That the Committee hold a public meeting as soon as possible and no later than June 1, 2013, to address concerns expressed by officers of Parliament in the letter of September 12, 2011, to the Chairman of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Official Languages regarding their independence and accountability, focusing solely on the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 81(4), the Committee commenced consideration of the Main Estimates 2013-14: Vote 20 under PRIVY COUNCIL referred to the Committee on Monday, February 25, 2013.
 

The Chair called Vote 20 under PRIVY COUNCIL.

 

Graham Fraser made a statement and, with Ghislaine Charlebois, Colette Lagacé, Nancy Premdas et Sylvain Giguère, answered questions.

 

Vote 20 under PRIVY COUNCIL carried.

 

ORDERED, — That the Chair report Vote 20 under PRIVY COUNCIL to the House.

 

At 5:13 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
