The Special Committee on Violence Against Indigenous Women met at 6:01 p.m. this day, in Room 268, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Stella Ambler, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Stella Ambler, Niki Ashton, Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Kelly Block, Jean Crowder, Libby Davies, Robert Goguen, Cathy McLeod, Michelle Rempel, Greg Rickford and Susan Truppe.

 

Acting Members present: Linda Duncan for Romeo Saganash and Kellie Leitch for Robert Goguen.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lyne Casavant, Analyst; Julie Cool, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Families of Sisters in Spirit: Bridget Tolley, Co-Founder. As individuals: Colleen Cardinal; Marie Sutherland. Carrier Sekani Family Services: Mary Teegee, Executive Director, Child and Family Services; Wendy Kellas, Coordinator, Community safety. Caribou Child and Youth Centre: Jamie Crozier, Coordinator. PACE Sexual Assault and Crisis Centre: Ruth Proulx, Therapist and Community Outreach Coordinator. Royal Canadian Mounted Police: Kevin Brosseau, Commanding Officer, "D" Division; Shirley Cuillierrier, Director, Federal Policing Partnership and External Relations; Tyler Bates, Director, National Aboriginal Policing and Crime Prevention Services.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Tuesday, February 26, 2013, the Committee resumed its study of violence against indigenous women.
 

Marie Sutherland, Bridget Tolley and Colleen Cardinal made statements and answered questions.

 

Mary Teegee by videoconference from Prince George, British Columbia, made a statement and, with Wendy Kellas answered questions.

 

At 7:00 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 7:10 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Jamie Crozier, Ruth Proulx, Kevin Brosseau and Shirley Cuillierrier made statements and, with Tyler Bates, answered questions.

 

At 8:01 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
