The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met at 8:45 a.m. this day, in Room 8-53, 131 Queen Street, the Chair, David Sweet, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Peter Braid, John Carmichael, Cheryl Gallant, Dan Harris, Hélène LeBlanc, Brian Masse, Hon. Geoff Regan, Kennedy Stewart and David Sweet.

 

Acting Members present: Harold Albrecht for Lee Richardson, Shelly Glover for Mike Lake, Nina Grewal for Phil McColeman, Roxanne James for Phil McColeman and Hon. Rob Merrifield for Mike Lake.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Mathieu Frigon, Analyst; Dillan Theckedath, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As an individual: Richard Gold, Professor, Faculty of Law, McGill University. UBM Techinsights: Harry Page, Chief Executive Officer. Hockey Canada: Dale M. Ptycia, Senior Manager, Licensing. Microsoft Canada Inc.: Chris Tortorice, Corporate Counsel.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, May 1st, 2012, the Committee resumed its study of the Intellectual Property Regime in Canada.
 

Harry Page, Richard Gold, Chris Tortorice and Dale M. Ptycia made statements and answered questions.

 

It was agreed, — That the motion adopted on May 1, 2012 regarding the study of the current Intellectual Property Regime in Canada be amended by adding after the words “leading edge technology” the following: “and that the Committee report it's findings to the House”.

 

The motion, as amended, read as follows:

That, pursuant to Standing Order 108 (2), the Committee undertake a study of the effectiveness of the current intellectual property regime in Canada, which will include the important role of intellectual property in fostering Canadian innovation and leading edge technology and that the Committee report its findings to the House.

 

At 10:37 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
