The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met at 8:47 a.m. this day, in Room 8-53, 131 Queen Street, the Chair, David Sweet, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Peter Braid, John Carmichael, Cheryl Gallant, Dan Harris, Hélène LeBlanc, Brian Masse, Phil McColeman, Hon. Geoff Regan, Lee Richardson, Kennedy Stewart and David Sweet.

 

Acting Members present: Harold Albrecht for Mike Lake.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Mathieu Frigon, Analyst; Dillan Theckedath, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: University of Manitoba: David T. Barnard, President and Vice-Chancellor; Digvir S. Jayas, Vice-President, Research and International. As an individual: Catherine Beaudry, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematical and Industrial Engineering, École Polytechnique de Montréal . University of Waterloo: Scott Inwood, Director, Commercialization. McMaster University: Gay Yuyitung, Business Development Manager, McMaster Industry Liaison Office.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, May 1, 2012, the Committee resumed its study of the Intellectual Property Regime in Canada.
 

Gay Yuyitung, by videoconference from Burlington, Ontario, Scott Inwood, David T. Barnard, Digvir S. Jayas and Catherine Beaudry made statements and answered questions.

 

Dan Harris moved, — That the Committee immediately call representatives from MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. and Industry Canada to appear on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 to update the Committee on the status of the Radarsat Constellation program.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Questioning of the witnesses resumed.

 

At 10:21 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:25 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

The Committee resumed consideration of the motion of Dan Harris, — That the Committee immediately call representatives from MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. and Industry Canada to appear on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 to update the Committee on the status of the Radarsat Constellation program.

 

Geoff Regan moved, — That the motion be amended by adding after the words “Industry Canada” the following: “, as well as the Minister of Industry, ”.

 

Peter Braid moved, — That the Committee proceed to sit in camera.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: Harold Albrecht, Peter Braid, John Carmichael, Cheryl Gallant, Phil McColeman, Lee Richardson — 6; NAYS: Dan Harris, Hélène LeBlanc, Brian Masse, Geoff Regan, Kennedy Stewart — 5.

 

At 10:35 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:36 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

At 10:46 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
