The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met by teleconference at 8:46 a.m. this day, in Room 306 La Promenade Building, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Paulina Ayala, Lois Brown, Bob Dechert, Peter Goldring, Nina Grewal, Hélène Laverdière, Hon. Dominic LeBlanc, Gary Ralph Schellenberger and Jinny Jogindera Sims.

 

Acting Members present: James Lunney for Dave Van Kesteren and Manon Perreault for Marc-André Morin.

 

Other Members present: Hon. Jim Karygiannis.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Allison Goody, Analyst; James Lee, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Barbara Martin, Director General, Middle East and Maghreb Bureau; Jeffrey K. McLaren, Director, Gulf and Maghreb Relations; Marie Gervais-Vidricaire, Director General, Stabilization and Reconstruction Task Force. Coptic Orthodox Community of Greater Montreal: Antoine A. Malek, Chair. Canadian Coptic Centre: Hani Tawfilis, Board Member, Mississauga. Hon. Hugh Segal, Senator.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a briefing on the situation in Egypt.
 

Barbara Martin made a statement and, with Marie Gervais-Vidricaire and Jeffrey McLaren, answered questions.

 

At 9:16 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:19 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Hani Tawfilis, Witness 1 and Antoine Malek made statements and answered questions.

 

At 10:17 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:20 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a briefing on the Commonwealth Eminent Persons Group.
 

The Hon. Hugh Segal, by teleconference from Australia, made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 10:47 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
