The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 306 La Promenade Building, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Lois Brown, Bob Dechert, Nina Grewal, Sadia Groguhé, Jean-François Larose, Hélène Laverdière, Gary Ralph Schellenberger, Jinny Jogindera Sims, Dave Van Kesteren and John Williamson.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Mark Eyking for Hon. Dominic LeBlanc and Alexandrine Latendresse for Hélène Laverdière.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Lee, Analyst; Charlotte Landry, Research Assistant.

 

Witnesses: As an individual: Sabine Luning, Professor, Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology, Leiden University, Netherlands.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, November 1, 2011, the Committee resumed its study on the role of the private sector in achieving Canada's international development interests.
 

The witness, by teleconference from Leiden, Netherlands, made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:34 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:35 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite Officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the Canadian International Development Agency to appear in order to provide a briefing on the situation in Mali.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite Asha Elkarib, Executive Director of the Sudanese Organization for Research and Training, to appear in order to brief the Committee on the situation in Sudan in terms of democracy and women's rights on Wednesday, April 25, 2012.

 

At 5:17 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
