The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 10:57 a.m. this day, in the Ballroom, Holiday Inn Select, Montréal, Québec, the Chair, the Hon. Hedy Fry, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Lois Brown, Nicole Demers, Luc Desnoyers, Hon. Hedy Fry, Irene Mathyssen and Michelle Simson.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Julie Cool, Analyst; Laura Munn-Rivard, Analyst. House of Commons: Simon Larouche, Committee Clerk.

 

Witnesses: Native Women's Shelter of Montreal: Nakuset, Executive Director; Carrie Martin, Evaluation Coordinator. Quebec Native Women Inc.: Ellen Gabriel, President; France Robertson, Coordinator for the women's shelter and non-violence file; Carole Brazeau, Justice and Public Security Coordinator. Amnesty International: Béatrice Vaugrante, Executive Director, Canada francophone Section; Karine Gentelet, Coordinator of aboriginal rights, Canadian Francophone Section. Native Friendship Centre of Montreal Inc.: Pamela Shauk, Outreach Worker. Stella: Émilie-Cloé Laliberté, General Coordinator. As individuals: Mylène Jaccoud, Full Professor, School of Criminology, Université de Montréal; Marie-Pierre Bousquet, Associate Professor, Faculty of Anthropology, University of Montreal.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, March 8, 2010, the Committee resumed its study of violence against Aboriginal women.
 

The Committee proceeded to a round table discussion.

 

Nakuset, Ellen Gabriel, Béatrice Vaugrante, Karine Gentelet and Émilie Laliberté made statements and, with Carrie Martin, France Robertson, Carole Brazeau and Pamela Shauk, answered questions.

 

At 1:00 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 2:03 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Mylène Jaccoud and Marie-Pierre Bousquet made statements and answered questions.

 

At 3:53 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:55 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

At 4:18 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
