The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met in a televised session at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Hon. Michael D.Chong, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Robert Bouchard, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Siobhan Coady, Mike Lake, Brian Masse, Anthony Rota, Dave Van Kesteren, Robert Vincent, Mike Wallace and Chris Warkentin.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Dan McTeague for Marc Garneau and Kevin Sorenson for Gord Brown.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Alysia Davies, Analyst; Dan Shaw, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada: Carman Baggaley, Strategic Policy Advisor; Elizabeth Denham, Assistant Privacy Commissioner of Canada; Hedy Kirkby, Acting Senior Counsel. Competition Bureau: Duane Schippers, Deputy Commissioner of Competition, Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Branch. Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Friday, May 8, 2009, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-27, An Act to promote the efficiency and adaptability of the Canadian economy by regulating certain activities that discourage reliance on electronic means of carrying out commercial activities, and to amend the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission Act, the Competition Act, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act and the Telecommunications Act.
 

Elizabeth Denham and Duane Schippers made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 4:55 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:10 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Konrad W. von Finckenstein made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 6:25 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
