The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in camera at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Kevin Sorenson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Vivian Barbot, Hon. Raymond Chan, Johanne Deschamps, Paul Dewar, Peter Goldring, Denis Lebel, Hon. Keith Martin, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry, Hon. Bob Rae and Kevin Sorenson.

 

Acting Members present: Sylvie Boucher for Wajid Khan.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Principal; James Lee, Analyst; Natalie Mychajlyszyn, Analyst.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on November 20, 2007, the Committee resumed its study of Canada's mission in Afghanistan.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report.

 

At 5:20 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:21 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Chair presented the Eighth Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure which read as follows:

That the list of witnesses sent to the Clerk's office for the China meetings be accepted;

That the Committee continue studying the draft report on Afghanistan during the meetings on May 13 and May 15, 2008;

That the Committee hold meetings on May 27 and 29 to here from witnesses on the study on the Canada-China Bilateral Human Rights Dialogue;

That a budget in the amount $18,000 for the study on the Canada-China Bilateral Human Rights dialogue be adopted and that the Chair forward the said budget to the Liaison Committee.

 

On motion of Paul Dewar, it was agreed, — That the report of the Subcommittee be concurred in.

 

Paul Dewar moved, — That his motion asking the Minister of Foreign Affairs be invited to appear before the Committee in relation to his record, be moved to the top of the list and be debated.

Debate arose thereon.

 

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
