The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Norman Doyle, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Johanne Deschamps, Barry Devolin, Norman Doyle, Meili Faille, Nina Grewal, Rahim Jaffer, Ed Komarnicki, Bill Siksay and Blair Wilson.

 

Acting Members present: Raymonde Folco for Hon. Albina Guarnieri, Mario Silva for Hon. Andrew Telegdi and Borys Wrzesnewskyj for Hon. Jim Karygiannis.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jennifer Wispinski, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: SOS Viet Phi: Maxwell Vo, President; Hoi Trinh, Attorney, VCA (Vietnamese Community in Australia); Mr. Patrick Nguyen; Mai Nguyen, Volunteer, VCA Office in Manila, Philippines; Richard Mahoney, Legal Counsel and Advisor. Falun Dafa Association of Canada: David Matas, Lawyer, Immigration and Human Rights, David Matas Barrister & Solicitor; Joel Chipkar, Spokesperson, Toronto; Lizhi He, Falun Gong practitioner; Xun (Shawn) Li, President; Carolyn Jin, President, Canada, Global Mission to Rescue Persecuted Falun Gong Practitioners; Shenli Lin, Falun Gong practitioner; Zhaojin Qiu, Falun Gong practitioner.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on May 15, 2006, the Committee commenced its study of Stateless Vietnamese in the Philippines.
 

Maxwell Vo, Hoi Trinh, Patrick Nguyen, Mai Nguyen and Richard Mahoney made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:35 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:40 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on May 15, 2006, the Committee commenced its study of Refugee Protection of Falun Gong Practioners.
 

David Matas, Joel Chipkar and Lizhi He made statements and, with Xun Li, answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

That consideration of motions from Bill Siksay was postponed to a later date.

 

At 5:40 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
