Thursday, March 22, 2007

The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met in camera at 11:11 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Norman Doyle, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Omar Alghabra, Barry Devolin, Norman Doyle, Meili Faille, Raymond Gravel, Nina Grewal, Rahim Jaffer, Hon. Jim Karygiannis, Ed Komarnicki, Bill Siksay, Hon. Andrew Telegdi and Blair Wilson.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Andrew Kitching, Analyst ; Trupati Patel, Analyst.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, June 21, 2006, the Committee resumed its study of Refugee Issues.

The Committee commenced consideration of a draft report.

At 12:30 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:31 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

And that the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration be invited to present on the Main Estimates

After debate, it was agreed that the report be amended by adding after Thursday, March 29, 2007 - Bill C-280: “Receive testimony from , the Interim Chair of the IRB and a Professor that deals with refugee issues.”

It was agreed that the word “Quebec Immigration Lawyers Association”, go after Barreau du Québec.

The report was adopted as amended.

Jim Karygiannis moved, — That the Standing Committee on citizenship and Immigration ask the Minister, the Deputy Minister, and other appropriate officials from the Department of Citizenship and Immigration to appear before the Committee to further discuss the issue of Lost Canadians and the measures the Government is taking to notify potentially affected Canadians of the retention rule, with regards to the letter from Deputy Minister Richard B. Fadden, dated February 23, 2007, and that the letter be appended to the committee evidence.

After debate, it was agreed, that the motion be further discussed during the meeting of Monday, March 26, 2007.

At 1:01 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
