Meeting No. 9

Monday, December 6, 1999

The Standing Committee on Health met at 3:37 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Lynn Myers, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Yvon Charbonneau, Ovid Jackson, Réal Ménard, Lynn Myers, Bernard Patry, Paul Szabo, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

Associate Member present: Daniel Turp.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier and Sonya Norris, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Labour Congress: Hassan Yussuff, Executive Vice-President; David Bennett, National Director, Department of Health, Safety and Environment. From the Canadian Medical Association: Dr. Peter Vaughan, Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer. From the University of Montreal: Dr. Bartha Knoppers, Professor. From the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute: Dr. Ron Worton, CEO and Scientific Director; Dr. Andrew Badley, Clinician and Research Scientist; Dr. Valerie Wallace, Research Scientist; Dr. David Park, Research Scientist; Dr. David Picketts, Research Scientist.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference dated Monday, November 29, 1999, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-13, An Act to establish the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, to repeal the Medical Research Council Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts. (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Tuesday, November 30, 1999, Meeting no. 6).

The witnesses made opening statements, and along with David Bennett, National Director, Department of Health, Safety and Environment, Canadian Labour Congress, answered questions.

At 4:49 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:55 p.m., the sitting resumed.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 6:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
