Wednesday, May 31, 2000

The Standing Committee on Health met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Lynn Myers, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Yvon Charbonneau, Reed Elley, Ovid Jackson, Réal Ménard, Bob Mills, Lynn Myers, Marcel Proulx, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

Acting Member present: Joe Jordan for Rose-Marie Ur.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Tim Williams, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation: Richard Warner, Director of Research. From the Image Plus Graphics: Philip Shilton, Vice President, Production. From the Graphics Communications International Union: Gary Barrie, President, Norman Beattie, Vice President, Local 500; George Novak, Secretary Treasurer, Local 100 M; Anthony Dale, Legal Counsel. From the Flexible Packaging Corporation: Bernard Matte, Chair and CEO. From the Shorewood Packaging Corporation: Thomas G. Shea, Executive Vice President and Managing Director, Canadian Operations; Bill Devaney, Sales Manager. From the Algroup Lawson Marden: Ron Syrkos, Vice President, General Manager, Tobacco Sector North America; David Sinden, General Manager, Flexible Packaging Canadian Operations. From the Southern Graphic Systems: Michael Seely, General Manager, Southern Graphic Systems.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Friday, May 12, 2000 the Committee resumed consideration of the Proposed Tobacco Regulations (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Tuesday May 31, 2000, Meeting No. 22)

Richard Warner and Philip Shilton made statements and answered questions.

Anthony Dale made a statement and, with the other witnesses from the Graphic Communications International Union, answered question.

Ron Syrkos from Algroup Lawson Marden made a statement and, with David Sinden and the other witnesses from the Flexible Packaging Corporation, the Shorewood Packaging Corporation and Southern Graphic Systems, answered questions.

At 5:45 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
