Wednesday, November 24, 1999
The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 9:00 a.m. this day, at theLord Nelson Hotel in Halifax, the Chair, Wayne Easter, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Yvan Bernier, John Cummins, Wayne Easter, Bill Matthews, Charlie Power, Carmen Provenzano and Peter Stoffer.
Other Member present: Mark Muise.
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.
Witnesses: From the Scotia Fundy Mobile Gear Fishermen's Association: Brian Giroux, Executive Director. From the Native Council of Nova Scotia: Roger Hunka, Aboriginal Rights Facilitator; Cory Francis, Prefect Fisheries Facilitator. As an individual: Hubert Saulnier. From the Eastern Shore Fishermen's Protection Association: Norma Richardson, President; Nellie Baker, Fish Manager. From the Ecology Action Centre: Mark Butler, Marine Co-ordinator. From the Gulf of Nova Scotia Fleet Planning Board: Percy Hayne, President; Herman Deveau, Director.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), study on the implications of the September 17th, 1999 Supreme Court decision on R. v. Marshall on the Management of fisheries in the Atlantic Region.
The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.
At 12:20 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
