Pursuant to Standing Orders 68(2) and 69(1), on motion of Mr. Strahl (Fraser Valley East), seconded by Mr. Chatters (Athabasca), Bill C–382, An Act to amend the Criminal Records Act (sexual offences against children), was introduced, read the first time, ordered to be printed and ordered for a second reading at the next sitting of the House.

Government Orders

The Order was read for the third reading of Bill C–66, An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code (Part I) and the Corporations and Labour Unions Returns Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts.

Mr. Gagliano (Minister of Labour), seconded by Mr. Peters (Secretary of State (International Financial Institutions)), moved, — That the Bill be now read a third time and do pass.

The House resumed consideration of the motion of Mr. Gagliano (Minister of Labour), seconded by Mr. Peters (Secretary of State (International Financial Institutions)), — That Bill C–66, An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code (Part I) and the Corporations and Labour Unions Returns Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts, be now read a third time and do pass.

The debate continued.

Mr. Gouk (Kootenay West–Revelstoke), seconded by Mr. Johnston (Wetaskiwin), moved the following amendment, — That the motion be amended by deleting all the words after the word “That” and substituting the following:

“Bill C–66, An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code (Part I) and the Corporations and Labour Unions Returns Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts, be not now read a third time, but that it be read a third time this day six months hence.”

At 5:30 p.m., pursuant to Standing Order 45, the House resumed consideration of the motion of Mr. Ramsay (Crowfoot), seconded by Mr. Speaker (Lethbridge), — That this House recognize that the families of murder victims are subjected to reliving the pain and fear of their experience as a result of the potential release of the victims’ murderers allowed under section 745 of the Criminal Code, and as a consequence, this House urge the Liberal Government to formally apologize to those families for repeatedly refusing to repeal section 745 of the Criminal Code.

The House proceeded to the taking of the deferred recorded division on the amendment of Mr. McClelland (Edmonton Southwest), seconded by Mr. Morrison (Swift Current–Maple Creek–Assiniboia), — That the motion be amended by inserting after the word “formally” the following:

“and immediately”.
